How it works

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is simply the act of raising money from lots of people (normally online).

Never heard of crowdfunding before? Don’t worry! People have been crowdfunding for ages, it’s just a new word for fundraising from a lot of people.

Did you know, in 1885 New York crowdfunded to finish off the Statue of Liberty? They raised money from more than 160,000 donors to build the base.

Since then, millions of people have crowdfunded to raise money for new creative projects, new business ideas and even school trips.

How it works FAQs

Who are the donors?

Your donors will be people from your personal network, your school's network and complete strangers! Parents, friends and family are a great place to start. Then go beyond: to the local community, school suppliers, local businesses and alumni. How many people your project reaches is up to you!

How much can I raise?

As much as you like! We recommend you limit your initial target to around £1,500. This is to help maximise your chances of success, as the lower the target, the easier it is to reach!

Can I raise more than my initial target?

Yes. The sky’s the limit! Just add a stretch target to make it clear what the extra money will go towards.

Who can post a project?

If your project is for the benefit of a UK school / college / pre-school / educational institution / PTA then you’re eligible. You must also be over the age of 18 (so if you're a student, get your teacher to help).

What are my responsibilities?

You choose the products and write your pitch on Rocketfund. When it's published, you need to share as much as possible (don't worry, we'll send you tips on how to do this). If your project meets its target, then you should thank your donors afterwards.

Does it cost anything?

It doesn’t cost anything to publish a project on Rocketfund and we don't charge any commission.

Projects that successfully hit their target will be charged transaction fees of 1.9% + 23p + VAT on UK/EU cards / 3.25% + 25p + VAT on non-EEA cards by our payment processor.

How does Rocketfund make money?

We want to help schools as much as possible, so don't charge a commission. Instead we ask for a small tip from donors as they make their pledge to help cover our costs.

What happens once I reach my target?

If you reach your target by your funding deadline then woohoo! You did it! You will receive the money in your bank account within 7 days.

How long does the process take?

You can create and launch a project in about 20 minutes. Then you need to spread the word, this could take 30 minutes or it could take a few weeks. Once your project is funded, you should receive the money within 7 days.
