New stretch target

It would be great to hit £30000 + so we can have the MUGA built ready for the winter months. By raising the money it will allow for children's PE lessons to happen all year round as our field gets too water logged during the winter. Breaktimes and lunchtimes will also benefit as currently due to the playground being too small to fit 420 pupils we have to use the plaza area at the front of our school which isn't safe. Anything we raise above £30000 would be used towards equipment for the MUGA like goals etc. The local community would also benefit as we can hire the MUGA out after school and at weekends.

Bolnore Village Primary School, the staff and I have worked together to enhance the children’s outdoor learning opportunities, play time and PE provision. This is due to the fact they are limited by our physical space and the number of children here. Although we have an established Forest School, we walk to the site at Ashenground and Bolnore Woods which we are happy to do, but we need access to facilities in all weathers on our school grounds. Post Covid and with mental health difficulties becoming even more prevalent among our younger generations, we are in desperate need of more outdoor provision.

Bolnore Village Primary School (BVPS) opened its doors to children in October 2010. We have grown year on year to become a 2-form entry school with a total of 413 pupils with capacity for 420.Bolnore Village Primary School has a great Forest School Programme, and the children love the outdoor learning. For this we use local woodland nearby and the Buffer Zone at our school. In addition, outside learning involves sports and Physical Education as well as social play times for break and lunchtimes. As the school has grown, we have quickly realised that our original outdoor space isn’t sufficient to enable all the children to have high quality and safe outdoor learning space.

To ensure that the children have enough space to play and socialise with their friends, we are using a plaza area outside the front of our school. This was not designed for play activities; it poses a safeguarding risk to the children, as it isn’t secure and requires a member of staff to be standing at the gate at all times. Although this gives the children some more space, compared to if they were all on the playground or field, the space is still very restrictive and doesn’t allow them to play ball games etc. PE lessons have also become difficult over the autumn, winter and early spring months when our field is too wet to use, the children’s PE lessons often must be adapted to use the playground or hall. Due to space restrictions and Covid, indoor PE hasn’t always been possible, as there hasn’t been a suitable place for this to take place.

The Way Forward

In the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, it is even more vital that we give the children more opportunity for physical activity and quality social times outside. The impact of the last 2 years can be evidenced in the mental health of many, and we know the benefits of fitness and the outdoors for good mental health and wellbeing. BVPS staff and children would love to be able to have uninterrupted playtimes, with space to run around in a safe environment and enjoy PE lessons throughout the year, even when the weather is inclement.

We have been fundraising over the past few years to raise money for a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). Our fantastic PTA (Parent Teacher Association), the Friends of Bolnore Village Primary School, have worked tirelessly, and the school have also managed to save through the growth fund. However, we are still falling short financially.

Not only will the MUGA be a fantastic benefit to our children, but we would like to be able to offer this out for hire to the local community for sporting and recreational activities, as the area will be floodlit. We feel this would be a great asset to the local community, not just in Bolnore, but also across Haywards Heath. Our intention is to allow the local community to hire the MUGA for sports and recreational activity, allowing it to become a true community asset.
